VAPT for Indian Startups: What to Test Before Your First Big Client

VAPT for Indian Startups: What to Test Before Your First Big Client
Spread the love

For many Indian startups, the first serious security question arrives in a sales call: an enterprise prospect sends a security questionnaire and asks for your latest VAPT report. Or an investor’s due diligence team asks how you test your platform. If you don’t have an answer, deals slow down.

This guide explains what to test first, when to test, and how to keep VAPT focused on what matters.

When a startup needs VAPT

  • Before an enterprise or BFSI customer goes live: they will usually ask for an independent report.
  • Before a funding round: investors increasingly look at security as part of due diligence.
  • Before launching a new product or major feature, especially anything involving payments or personal data.
  • When regulations apply, for example the DPDP Act for personal data, or RBI and SEBI requirements for fintechs.

What to test first

  1. Your main web application: login, password reset, roles and permissions, and business logic like pricing, coupons and approvals.
  2. Your APIs: especially whether one customer’s token can access another customer’s data.
  3. Your mobile app, if you have one: secrets inside the app, local storage, and the APIs behind it.
  4. Your cloud setup: storage buckets, IAM permissions, exposed databases and admin panels.

For most startups, these four areas cover the large majority of real risk.

How to keep VAPT affordable and useful

  • Scope clearly. Test the systems customers actually use rather than everything at once.
  • Insist on manual testing. A scanner report won’t satisfy enterprise buyers and misses access control and logic flaws.
  • Ask for a retest. A report showing issues fixed and verified is far more valuable in a sales or due diligence process.
  • Test after big releases, not just once a year.

What a good report should give you

An executive summary you can share with customers and investors, technical findings with evidence and severity, clear step-by-step fixes for your developers, and retest results. Our Ireland case study shows how this kind of report helped a growing tech company meet a compliance requirement and prepare for investor discussions.

Frequently asked questions

How much does VAPT cost for a startup in India?

It depends mainly on scope: how many applications, APIs, user roles and environments are tested. A focused scope covering your main app and APIs keeps cost manageable. See our guide on what affects VAPT cost in India.

Is an automated scan enough for enterprise customers?

Usually not. Enterprise buyers expect a manual penetration test with verified findings, business impact and a retest, not just scanner output.

How often should a startup run VAPT?

At least once a year and after major releases or architecture changes. Fast-moving teams often test new features as they ship.
